PAD THAI
You can taste Chinese influence in this delicious nearly-a-century-old dish. Rice noodles, egg, tofu, and shrimp are quick fried with fish sauce, sugar, tamarind, chili, and spring onion before being topped with fresh bean sprouts and roasted peanuts. You’ll fall in love with the incredible flavor!
TOM YUM
This Thai soup primarily focuses on two flavors – sour, and spicy. It is a very flavorful, herb-filled soup. There are quite a few versions, but the most popular is probably tom yum kung, the shrimp version. Imagine fresh, tasty prawn in a sour and spicy soup. Delicious!
LARB
This dish hails from the northeastern part of Thailand. It is essentially minced meat flavored with lime, fish sauce, and some herbs. Of course, we can’t forget the secret ingredient – roasted rice pounded into a powder. It’s best paired with some hot sticky rice.
KHAO SOI
Khao soi is a tasty coconut curry noodle soup. Most of the time it is made with chicken and beef. Locals toss in some shallots and pickled greens as well as a squeeze of lime for a noodle dish that is full of flavor and texture.
SOM TUM
Another dish that hails from the northeast, somtum has since spread all over the country. There are so many variations, but the classic one consists of green papaya chopped into thin strips and pounded in a mortar and pestle, known as a krok, with long beans, tomato, lime, fish sauce, palm sugar, and plenty of chilli. Order a couple variations up to eat with some hot sticky rice for a healthy meal, or throw in some kai yarng (below) to for something more substantial.
PAD KRAPAO
This local favorite is meat quick fried with holy basil. It contains hefty amounts of chili and garlic, and lots of people choose to toss in some extra. It comes along with steaming white jasmine rice and oftentimes a fried egg with crispy edges and a runny yolk.
KAENG KEAW WAN KAI
Better known among foreigners as green curry, this is a delicious coconut-based spicy dish that will blow your mind. It is rich in spices and usually contains a type of meat, round eggplant, and some other herbs. Don’t eat it alone – order jasmine rice.
YUM
This is a lighter meal to have. It’s also known to many as spicy Thai salad. Meat or seafood is tossed with a spicy and sour dressing along with some onion, tomato, and plenty of other herbs. Definitely don’t miss this one.
KAI YARNG
Grilled chicken may seem rather dull compared to the other things on this list, but Thai-style grilled chicken is definitely something you’ve got to taste. The marinade is a lot more flavorful than typical grilled chicken. There are flavors of fish sauce, coriander root, and garlic. It’s often served with a spicy and salty sauce. Pair with sticky rice and some som tum and you’re in for a delicious treat.
